Ruby L. Powers is the founder and managing attorney of Powers Law Group, P.C. Located in Houston, Texas, the four-attorney firm focuses on immigration law including waivers of inadmissibility, asylum, deportation, family– and employment-based immigration. She is Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. A graduate of University of North Carolina School of Law, she is an alumna of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses and Leadership Houston. She is the author of the forthcoming book How to Start and Build an Immigration Law Practice.
As the child of a Mexican immigrant, Powers gravitated toward an international life by later marrying a Turkish immigrant. Having lived and studied in Belgium, Mexico, Turkey, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates, Powers speaks Spanish, French, and a hint of Turkish. For a decade, Powers has managed her firm and in 2011 she ran her law firm from Dubai and Turkey for 14 months.
She has served as AILA’s Law Practice Management Chair between 2015-2017 and TX Chapter Advocacy (Co-) Liaison from 2015-2019. She served on the State Bar of Texas Law Practice Management committee between 2015-1018. Powers currently serves as the Chair of the Houston Bar Association Law Practice Management and on the AILA Innovation Task Force and Media Advocacy Committee.
Powers was awarded the AILA Advocacy Award, Houston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award, Super Lawyers Rising Star, Houstonia Magazine Top Lawyer, and was a Women Who Mean Business Women to Watch Finalist. She is a frequent national and international speaker and media resource as well as an author on immigration law and law practice management topics.
